About us.

Our history

Founded on the 27th February 1937 in Port Louis, the Tamil League has helped to supplement the format school education of its members by a varied range of extra-mural and character building activities. It has since then been a meeting place for youth, members of the present generation, boys and girls altogether.

In 1992, the present 2.25 acre plot of land in Reduit was purchased and the building thereon inaugurated in 1995.

It is not possible to list all all the achievements of the League but certain landmarks deserve to be highlighted. The League has been regularly participating in the Mauritius Youth Drama Festival in the 50’s and 60’s and won most of the awards of this festival. It has represented the town of port louis in many literary activities and a regular participant in inter clubs and inter districts debates.

Throughout its 75 years of existence, the Tamil League has managed through thick and thin to remain true to its original socio-cultural vocation. It is today a highly credible and widely respected institution.

Mission and objectives

The main objectives of the Tamil League, as they are stated in its constitution, are as follows :

  • Promote the development and welfare of its members and their families, by appropriate educational, cultural, social, economic sport and recreational activities

  • Promote language and culture

  • Enhance the development and progress of the community

  • Work closely with other organisations in matters of general interest for the welfare of the community

  • Help build a sound society and a strong and harmonious nation

The creation of the required synergy, through appropriate structural reforms and capacity building for the promotion and internationalisation of cultural values, will be the supporting pillars of our everyday life.
